Open Source Software Open Source Software is Software where the source code and any modifications have to be made publically available. This software and specifically the Open Standards that they embody has been important to the development of the Internet as an Open Network. In the early days of the Internet many companies created their own closed software and if that had become popular the Internet would have become a group of Walled Gardens.
